Preserving Self-Worth in the Face of Unemployment

Genuine Interaction Always Wins

Born October 10th, 1982, my generation enjoyed awesome video games at home and at the arcades, slamming pogs and reading physical books, Along with many of these activities were more organic social interactions, as in not electronically represented on a screen. However, the Internet came along later and changed everything: physical books and video games are now purchased and ingested digitally. Also, pogs are long gone, replaced with Solitaire for Windows and World of Warcraft.

R.I.P
Despite these massive changes in how we interact with the world around us, some counterproductive societal ideals still endure. Much of this can be attributed to parents passing on their broken ideals to their children, thus perpetuating the cycle through untold generations. This phenomenon appears to be the reason why adults effectively marry an abusive parent or loved one, why poor children tend to become poor adults, and why children from broken homes tend to experience failed relationships later in life.

Breaking the Cycle: Stop Perpetuating Rape Culture

Stop Perpetuating Rape Culture

I read an article today where a father (who happens to be an influential blogger) wrote about his 5-year old daughter's recent experience with her school's dress code. Apparently, his 5-year old daughter was wearing a full-length dress with spaghetti straps and by the time she came home, her shoulders were covered and, inexplicably, had pants on underneath her dress. The school backed up their "rationale" with policy, stating that spaghetti straps are "against dress code policy".

The father, Jef Rouner, wrote a post for the Houston Press

Prison Reform: Even Brick Walls Can Change

Even Brick Walls Can Change

As a former intern with my local Probation & Parole office, I've come to appreciate the bravery it takes on the PO's part to walk into a potentially dangerous situation when conducting home visits.

These particular visits can occur at any time of the day, with the objective of ensuring that the parolee is in compliance with the terms of their early release. Home visits could range from the innocuous to the deadly.
